Well, I think we know where this is going and the answer as for many professions is mostly yes.  AI building design and construction is already here and the first targets will be the more functional rule based buildings.  Retail sheds, supermarkets, commercial offices and housing blocks where maximising floor space and controlling costs is key.  In the housing sector developer led estates will be an early target to maximise efficiency and profit and probably also highly technical buildings such as Passive House design which is already very rule dependant and spreadsheet controlled.  After that I can imagine easy online tools for clients to design their own extensions and loft conversions with simple drop down menus to fill in the planning authority and other regulatory requirements along with a selection of styles and materials to choose from.  The AI will coordinate the design, produce the drawings, calculate costs and submit the planning application in a matter of clicks – and for a bargain price.  As these tools become more sophisticated I can see much architecture being managed this way with architects relegated to managing the software or helping clients negotiate their ways around it.  As AI software takes over the design process small architects will need to go and work for the AI companies themselves or for larger firms, much as our traditional high street butchers and fish mongers have been absorbed into Supermarkets.  AI may well help produce some beautiful building and there will of course be a few bespoke high end practices left offering a traditional service but the danger is that the power, money and control of the profession will end up in the hands of a few tech giants who control the software with little opportunity or choice left for clients or architects.  AI may promise us beautiful Corbusian style flats while delivering profit maximised boxes. Anyway- back to my desk.
