Carreg Cyd: Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

New build cottage on the hills overlooking Newport Bay in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

This new project in Newport Pembrokeshire has been an opportunity to explore an ongoing preoccupation of mine, trying to unpick, update and re-make a modern Welsh cottage.  There are some rules to follow:  A simple form.  Modest in scale, construction and material that are hard wearing and sympathetic to the elements, a good pitched roof, low eaves & solid walls.

The house has timber famed interiors which celebrate functional aesthetics and multi purpose elements, where beams are for hanging things from as much as holding up the floor above.  Traditional cottages had small windows, shuttered against the cold when glazing was expensive and people spent almost their entire life outside.  The modern cottage is insulated to Passive standards with large triple glazed windows to bring in plenty of light.  The house steps down the hill and opens up to a sunny terrace overlooking the bay.
